Boston, USA
When planning a trip to the US, it is always difficult to choose amongst the many popular cities. Which one is the right fit for your holiday plans? Do you prefer the hustle and bustle of the city or the relaxing sound of the ocean?
I visited Boston in September 2019 and I totally recommend you stop by even if it’s only for a couple of days! From it’s many quarters to cityscapes, Boston has so much to discover and could probably be considered a smaller and calmer version of New York City!
I put together the Ultimate Guide to visiting Boston based on what I experienced throughout my trip! Enjoy!
Boston’s Must-Visit Locations
Beacon Hill
Located in the centre of the city, Beacon Hill is a small quarter composed of typical Boston style houses and streets. At every corner, you will find a quaint street bordered by brick houses. You’ll even find small coffee shops to relax in after visiting Beacon Hill.
During my visit to Beacon Hill, I came across Acorn Street which is definitely one of the most Instagramable streets there! However, you’re not allowed to go down it since it is a residential area so make sure to stay respectful!
Harvard
One of the world’s most well-known universities, Harvard, is a must-visit when in Boston! Learn all about the history and get the feel of the academic world as you explore Harvard. I suggest taking a guided tour of the campus to get more in-depth explanations!
The Parks of Boston
Boston is a city where you’ll find skyscrapers right next to huge green parks. I recommend walking around Boston Common and Boston Public Garden; there are ponds, flowers, and lovely bridges for you to admire as you take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Make sure to look out for the squirrels who will come to you looking for food!
Boston’s North End Little Italy
This is the place where history meets culture. North End is chock-full of Italian restaurants and as you walk down the many streets in this quarter, you will find yourself fully immersed in a cultural atmosphere.
Head to Salem St. to find plenty of amazing restaurants, including Pauli’s which have the best Lobster Rolls.
Where to Shop?
Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market
Located next to Quincy Market, Faneuil Hall Marketplace is the place for souvenirs. You will also find plenty of stalls and shops in this area.
Downtown Crossing
Downtown Crossing is where you’ll find all the shops you’ll ever need. From Primark to Macy’s you’ll end up spending hours on end looking through all of them.
Boston’s Day Activities
Whale Watching
From April to October, you can go on Whale Watching Tours which bring you alongside the coast. If you are lucky enough, you will see many whales with their calves and even dolphins!
This activity takes about 3 hours in total and if you get seasick, I recommend you pass on this activity!
The Best Views of Boston
The Prudential
Being one of the highest skyscrapers of Boston, the Prudential offers a stunning 360° view on the whole city. Not a lot of tourists typically go to this viewpoint so it is generally not so crowded, bonus!
From the top, you will be able to see the Charles River, the financial district and even Beacon Hill!
The Entrance cost is $21, just a heads up!
The Food
If you’re looking for a place to taste the local foods, Quincy Market is the place to go! Inside, you’ll find plenty of food stands from typical hotdogs to fancy desserts!
Lobster Rolls
Since Boston is on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, it is known for its Lobster Rolls. The dish is typically composed of a bun topped with Lobster Tail mixed with mayonnaise. The prices are quite high, however, and can even go up to $15 a roll! It’s worth it though!
I tried one at Pauli’s, located in the Italian Quarter, which, according to the tour guide, is the best in town!
Boston Cream Pie
The Boston Cream Pie is a cake topped with custard cream and chocolate and is one of Boston’s well-known deserts (hints the name). You can find and try them in Quincy Market!
Transportation
The Subway
Transportation is relatively easy in Boston since there is a subway line that runs throughout the whole city. You can purchase a ticket for each ride or you can buy the Charlie Card which is a prepaid ticket for 7 days and costs around 20$! I recommend this option if you’re going to be travelling to a lot of the different parts of Boston unless you enjoy walking!
