The Ultimate Guide: How To Travel Eco-friendly

The Ultimate Guide: How To Travel Eco-friendly

You dream of travelling the world, visiting new places every month, relaxing on the most paradisiacal beaches on the other side of the world. Yet, you read all these articles in the news recently saying that travelling is bad for the environment since planes pollute the air way too much as well as all other travelling ventures.

Now how do you still pursue your dreams of travelling without contributing to climate change?

I’ve written an article just for you! Here are small but effective ways to travel eco-friendly. Because no matter how small every action helps!

Pack your bags efficiently

When packing your bag for your next trip, it is nearly inevitable to forget something at home like a toothbrush, hairbrush or a swimming costume. But the consequence is that you have to buy something at the store as you arrive that you already have at home…..

Make a to-do list that you go over before heading out to avoid buying things you don’t need or probably won’t use once you return from your trip.

Local is always best

Most of us travel to experience different and unknown cultures from around the world. So be smart and choose to have a typical dish at the local market instead of going to McDonald’s for example. By doing so, not only are you contributing and supporting the local business but you’re also boycotting the big chains which are an image of mass production and big contributors to pollution.

Use eco-friendly and reusable travel accessories

Instead of using plastic-based products try turning to reusable ones that are made with sustainable materials. Such products include cotton bags, bamboo toothbrushes, biodegradable soap, and reusable straws.

My Tip: Make sure to use biodegradable sunscreen, especially when you are going on a beach holiday. A lot of the substances in most sunscreens are very harmful to marine life.

Public transport for the win

Try, at all costs, to avoid taking a taxi from the airport to your hotel or for any other short distance for that matter. It may seem like the best option after a long flight but if you do some research, there are plenty of public buses, trains, and metros that will bring you right to where you need to be!

By doing this, you save so much extra gas and by taking the train or metro you can avoid traffic that can last for hours on end!

Take advantage of free things

Tour buses are one of the top touristic things to do when visiting a new place. But have you ever heard of free walking tours? They walk you through the best parts of the city and provide you with interesting facts about everything!

The perk? You are able to discover and learn much more all while not polluting the air.

Rent a bike or scooter

In most cities, you can now rent bikes and even scooters freely for one day or more. It’s perfect to go around the city at your own pace. Plus most of them are electric so you can go much faster!

Use fly-eco.com to book your flight

Did you know that a website exists that “plants / saves at least 10 trees to offset+ the CO2 emissions of your flight?” When you book through fly-eco.com, that’s exactly what they do! You just search your departure and arrival date as if you were on any other booking website and that’s all you have to do! Pretty impressive right!?

Search the most eco-friendly airlines

When booking a flight it is easy to go for the cheapest option but it’s for sure not always the most eco-friendly choice. Do some research before booking with an airline to see if it actually meets the standards of an eco-friendly airline.

Avoid plastic bottles

On a trip, it is always easy to go to the store and grab a couple of water bottles for the day. I agree, in a lot of countries, portable water is not drinkable but there is always a way to avoid buying plastic bottles every day. In hotels, there are always refillable water stations so take advantage of them!

My tip: bring your own refillable bottle everywhere you go. I’ve linked my favourite one below!

  1. Thank you for sharing these tips! While I am travelling I never think to rent a bike or scooter but what a brilliant way to see the place I am visiting. Also taking a water bottle with me is another great tip to cut down on plastic pollution.
